What kind of research do you think is necessary if you’re to write outside your experience?
I think in pretty much
every situation, as much research as possible is necessary, especially if the
‘experience’ is about another culture. If someone wrote about, say, mental
illness, you’d think they’d put in the effort to research as much as they can
about it. They could interview people with that illness, they could look online
(or on paper) at other stories (real or fiction), and they could look up
statistics and other information. The same goes for writing about other
experiences. If I were to write about another culture, I would 100% make sure
that I knew everything I could possibly know about that culture so that I
didn’t say anything that could potentially come across as offensive or
inappropriate.
